Report Automation Tool

Overview

A documentation automation solution that streamlines the creation of EMC compliance reports by combining project information, engineering data, images, and standardized templates into a consistent report.

The Opportunity

One of my responsibilities as the company's technical writer is creating customer-facing EMC compliance reports. Supporting approximately ten engineers and test technicians often meant balancing multiple projects at once. As testing demand increased, report turnaround times stretched to about two weeks, leading to understandable customer frustration.

Rather than accepting the delay as inevitable, I began looking for a better approach.

Research

I researched documentation automation solutions and discovered that while examples existed, very few addressed the level of complexity required for EMC compliance reports. The reports combined structured data, engineering information, images, templates, and varying test configurations.

Because I couldn't find an existing solution that met these requirements, I designed my own.

My Role

I independently designed and developed the first iteration of the report automation tool, leveraging AI as a development partner to accelerate research, problem solving, and implementation.

The application automatically assembles report content by combining project information, engineering data, templates, and images into a draft report that previously required hours of manual effort.

Demonstration

After completing the first working version, I demonstrated the application to the engineering team.

Watching a report generate in only a few seconds instead of hours immediately illustrated the potential impact of the automation.

Current Status

Report Automation 1.0 has successfully demonstrated the concept and core functionality.

The next phase focuses on collaboration with engineers to refine workflows, validate edge cases, and integrate the solution into existing reporting processes. Progress has been gradual because engineering resources are naturally focused on customer testing schedules.
